NCSD Nutrition and Food Service Department
Novi Community Schools Nutrition and Food Service is committed to providing and serving foods that best enhance our students'  academic, athletic and personal performance. Novi's Food Service Department prepares lunch for over 6000 students daily, preschool through 12th grade.  U.S.D.A. guidelines are followed to ensure that our children are offered healthy choices at every age level.  Each lunch includes a main entree and side choices of 1% chocolate or white milk, juice, fruit, vegetables and breads.  Many schools offer a variety of ala carte items that can be purchased separately. Novi Meadows Checks out New  Menu Items for Spring!

It may still be snowing and cold but Novi Meadows students enjoyed a new 100% frozen fruit slushes during a Tuesday, January 26th taste test.  Every year, Novi Schools Food Service and the Novi Meadows Leadership group look at and taste food items being considered for the lunch program.   This year’s choices included plain and spicy chicken wings, potato encrusted Pollock, and waffles from Complete Food Services as well as a new pizza from Dominos.

For the past twelve months, Dominos has been working on a healthy pizza choice that would meet nutritional guidelines required by the National School Lunch program. Dominos brought a sample of their efforts - a 51% whole grain, low sodium sauce, low fat cheese plain and pepperoni pizza made just for schools.

Our students took their job seriously and filled out a survey for Complete Foods and Dominos.  Student comments ranged from “loved the crunch fish” to “more spice in the pizza sauce”.   Both companies were happy to hear the student suggestions and comments as they research items that are healthier and still taste great.

The Novi Schools Food Service Department appreciates the time and support our students have given.   Cafeteria managers Nancy Russell (Novi Meadows 6) and Gale Roberts (Novi Meadows5) will take a careful look at the student surveys and evaluate the food items offered.
Plan on seeing some of the “Student Choice Favorites” on our March menu.

MAKE SURE THE FLU DOESN'T CATCH YOU!!!
As our students head back to school after a summer of fun, the cold and flu season is just around the corner. Although the flu can be serious, there are some simple steps you can take to protect your child.
1.  Wash your hands, wash your hands, and wash your hands!!  To minimize the germs passed around your family, make frequent hand washing a rule for everyone. Don't underestimate the power of hand washing! The few second s you spend at the sink could save you trips to the doctor's office
 2.   Eat Healthy!    A whole foods-based diet adds to overall human health and immunity. Fresh fruits and vegetables are especially vital as well as low fat meats and poultry. Avoid added sugar and highly refined starches such as white bread, cakes and cookies.
 3.  Get enough sleep!  If you feel like “you are coming down with something,” rest and proper sleep may be one of your cheapest and most enjoyable remedies!
 4. Eliminate stress!  Too much stress hinders the immune system. Constant stress could increase risks associated with a variety of conditions such as heart, allergic, and immune diseases including the common cold and flu.
And remember, an ounce of common sense can spell the difference between a healthy versus a “sickly” cold and flu season for your child.
