NCSD Nutrition and Food Service Department
Novi Community Schools Nutrition and Food Service is committed to providing and serving foods that best enhance our students'  academic, athletic and personal performance. Novi's Food Service Department prepares lunch for over 6000 students daily, preschool through 12th grade.  U.S.D.A. guidelines are followed to ensure that our children are offered healthy choices at every age level.  Each lunch includes a main entree and side choices of 1% chocolate or white milk, juice, fruit, vegetables and breads.  Many schools offer a variety of ala carte items that can be purchased separately. Click onto your child's school site to view additional information.

START THE DAY THE NUTRITIOUS WAY - MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS BREAKFAST
Do you want your children to be alert, focused and ready to tackle the day's academic challenges? Encourage them to eat breakfast. Not just on test days, but every day of the year. It's well-documented that breakfast eaters are healthier and more energetic throughout the day.
Breakfast=Achievement
National studies consistently confirm that breakfast can help your children concentrate, think, behave and learn. Eating breakfast:
• Improves classroom performance, including better test scores and grades
• Increases children's ability to focus and concentrate on school work
• Decreases behavior problems and tardiness
• Increases attendance rate
Just as important, when students routinely start their day with breakfast, chances are good that it will become a habit that carries into their teenage and adult years.
Novi Community Schools offers breakfast at Novi Meadows 5 and 6, at Novi Middle School and Novi High School. A “Grab and Go “ breakfast as well as a variety of a la carte snacks is available at each of the schools before classes start.  Students may use their lunch accounts to purchase a breakfast at $1.50 or snacks from $.25 to $1.25.  Meal times vary at each school.

MEALMAGIC POINT OF SALE SYSTEM
Novi Community Schools will continue using MealMagic as our food service program point-of-sale system.  As soon as your child is registered, a lunch account is set up automatically.  In addition, parents can contact the food service department at your school to add messages to their student’s account regarding allergies or menu choices.  MealMagic also offers parents the ability to check their child’s account for meal histories and deposit verification.   In order to access this free service, go to www.LunchDeposit.com and click on the sign-up link for Michigan, and then for Novi Schools.  You will be asked for a student number.  This is an 8 digit student ID number that can be obtained by calling food service.  Once your information has been verified you will receive an email with a password and instructions on using the system for meal histories or optional credit card deposits.   Novi Community Schools will be charging $2.00 for each transaction when you use your credit/debit card through LunchDeposit.com. Credit cards accepted for online payment are Visa, Mastercard and Discover.  Participation in the website is optional. Deposits sent to school with your child in check form will always be accepted.  For questions concerning the either MealMagic or LunchDeposit.com, please call Karen Dixon at 248-449-1200 X2020 or email at kdixon@novi.k12.mi.us  in the Food Service Department.

MAKE SURE THE FLU DOESN'T CATCH YOU!!!
As our students head back to school after a summer of fun, the cold and flu season is just around the corner. Although the flu can be serious, there are some simple steps you can take to protect your child.
1.  Wash your hands, wash your hands, and wash your hands!!  To minimize the germs passed around your family, make frequent hand washing a rule for everyone. Don't underestimate the power of hand washing! The few second s you spend at the sink could save you trips to the doctor's office
 2.   Eat Healthy!    A whole foods-based diet adds to overall human health and immunity. Fresh fruits and vegetables are especially vital as well as low fat meats and poultry. Avoid added sugar and highly refined starches such as white bread, cakes and cookies.
 3.  Get enough sleep!  If you feel like “you are coming down with something,” rest and proper sleep may be one of your cheapest and most enjoyable remedies!
 4. Eliminate stress!  Too much stress hinders the immune system. Constant stress could increase risks associated with a variety of conditions such as heart, allergic, and immune diseases including the common cold and flu.
And remember, an ounce of common sense can spell the difference between a healthy versus a “sickly” cold and flu season for your child.
