Course Descriptions

0721 Beginning Dance
Students will learn introductory dance movements in modern, ballet, and jazz techniques. Units of learning will include: terminology, composition and dance history. Students will develop kinesthetic techniques to improve their levels of flexibility, coordination, posture, and balance. Attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of class is required. This class is required before taking any additional dance courses and is used a placement audition for sequential dance courses.

0722 Dance II A
Designed for the students with previous dance training, this course reinforces more advanced dance techniques and composition. Students will build upon previous dance experience, knowledge, and training. Units of learning will include the study of technical and locomotor elements, creative expression, terminology, and history. Attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of class is required. Must have completed beginning dance and received a passing grade.

0723 Dance II B

Designed for students who have achieved a high degree of skill, this course explores different dance styles and focuses on detailed aspects of dance techniques at an accelerated pace. Units of learning include continued development of technical and locomotor elements, creative expression, terminology, history, and composition. Attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of class is required. Must have completed beginning dance and earned a passing grade and have permission of dance teacher and/or a placement audition.

0725 Dance III B

Dance IV
0726 Semester 1 • 0727 Semester 2
A sequential component of dance curriculum which builds upon technical and creative skills introduced in Dance III. Designed for students who have achieved a high degree of skill, this course explores different dance styles and focuses on the detailed aspects of dance technique at an accelerated pace. Units of learning include continued development of technical and locomotor elements, creative expression, composition, and use of technology. This is a performance oriented course for advanced dancers, essentially a "Dance Troupe." Attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of class is required. Students must enroll in two semesters for this class. Must have completed beginning dance and earned a passing grade and have permission of dance teacher and/or a placement audition.

0728 Choreography
Designed for students with previous dance training, this course teaches choreographic tools, knowledge, and understanding for creating movement. This course focuses on improvisation, design, and composition in dance. Units of learning will provide opportunities for students to create their own choreographic projects and produce them in a show. Attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of class is required. Must have completed beginning dance with a C or better and have dance teacher permission.

0729 Semester 1 • 0730 Semester 2
The purpose of this course is to demonstrate how dance is a medium for learning about self and the world. This course will provide artistic, aesthetic, and cultural education while developing creative potential through physical, non verbal expression. IB dance will take a holistic approach to dance while embracing a variety of traditions and dance cultures. Students will obtain skills relative to choreographers, dance scholars, and/or performers. Students will compose their own dances and analyze the process. Students will compare and contrast dances from different cultures and traditions through practical and theoretical investigation. Through participation in this class, students will perform dances in one or more styles and analyze their technique and performance. Students will compose their own dances and analyze the process.
