NCSD 1:1 Technology Information

Greetings Novi Community School District Families,

Novi Community School District is implementing a 1:1 device program for all students beginning with the 2020-2021 school year for all students (K-12 and pre-K special education)

Students in pre-kindergarten special education, kindergarten and first grade will be issued an iPad.

Green and blue iPads on a table.

Students in Grades 2 –12 will be issued a Chromebook laptop.

Chromebooks on tables at Novi High.

These tools were selected to best support student learning for each grade level. The shift to 1:1 will support student learning regardless of the physical location of our students. This opportunity was made possible thanks to our community support in passing the 2019 Bond.

If a student received a mobile device in March, THE DEVICE AND THE CHARGER must be returned before being issued a 1:1 device TO ENSURE DEVICES ARE UP TO DATE. FEEL FREE TO RETURN THE DEVICE WHEN YOU COME TO PICK UP YOUR NEW 1:1 DEVICE.

If a student received a mobile device in March, the device and the charger must be returned before being issued a 1:1 device. Feel free to return the device when you come to pick your 1:1 device.

Families are not required to take a district device. However, if a family opts out, it is strongly recommended that the student have a laptop, Chromebook or iPad that can connect to the remote learning tools (Google, SeeSaw, Schoology, and video conference tools). When in-person learning resumes, students will be expected to bring their device fully charged to school, along with the charger each day.

Please print and bring a completed, signed version of the Student Computer Use Acknowledgment Form

Please read information about the optional student computer insurance registration.

If a family is unable to make the dedicated pick-up time, please contact us by email at technology@novik12.org and we will reach out to you to discuss other options. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the student will receive a device before the start of the school year if the family is unable to come during the scheduled distribution dates.

The expectations for students are:

  • Use the device to support and participate in Novi Community School District learning opportunities

  • Bring the fully-charged device and its charger to and from school every day when in-person classes are in session

  • Use and maintain the device in accordance with school policies and the student code of conduct

  • Report any problems with the device to the necessary staff or the Oakland Schools Service Desk (248.209.2060) as soon as possible

  • Devices will contain district-approved software and filtering tools. Students should not tamper with, remove, or install any software

Families are responsible for any damage to the district-provided device. To help alleviate any potential repair costs, NCSD is offering an optional insurance program for families to enroll the device in. The program is available for an annual fee with a zero deductible for any repairs or replacement due to accidental damage, loss, or theft.

The information for enrolling the device in this optional insurance program will be provided when families pick up the device. The optional insurance is expected to be $20 - $30, depending on the device.

Devices that are enrolled in the optional insurance program will also have access to loaner devices while the original device is being repaired. Families that opt out of the insurance program will be responsible for the full cost to repair or replace the device, if necessary.

Families without home internet access may request a district-provided hotspot to use during remote learning. This device is intended for those who do not have any access to the internet. Please contact technology@novik12.org if your family needs access to a hotspot.

Students who require specific technology related to an Individualized Educational Plan will be contacted through the Special Education Department to discuss arrangements.

Thank you again to our community for supporting the 2019 bond, which is making our 1:1 program feasible.

Sincerely,

Novi Community School District Technology Department
