Superintendent Search - Next Steps

On Thursday, June 16, the Board met in an open meeting to select the candidates who will move forward to the second round of interviews.  These interviews will take place on Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

The selected candidates and their interview times are:

  • 5:30 PM - John Bernia, Chief Academic Officer, Warren Consolidated Schools, Warren, MI
  • 6:55 PM - Carol Diglio, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources & Title IX Coordinator, Oak Park School                         District, Oak Park, MI
  • 8:20 PM - Benjamin Mainka, Superintendent, Swartz Creek Community Schools, Swartz Creek, MI

We invite and encourage all stakeholders to watch the interviews and provide feedback. Those interested in watching the interviews can follow the live stream on the District’s YouTube channel.  The interviews will also be open to the public.   

Opportunities for stakeholder groups to meet the finalists

There will be three opportunities for our students, staff, administrators, parents, and community members to come and meet the candidates and ask questions.  The schedule is:

Monday, June 20, 2022 with Benjamin Mainka, Superintendent, Swartz Creek Community Schools, Swartz Creek, MI.

Wednesday, June 22, 2022 with Carol Diglio, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources & Title IX Coordinator,                                                   Oak Park School District, Oak Park, MI.

Thursday, June 23 with John Bernia, Chief Academic Officer, Warren Consolidated Schools, Warren, MI.

Stakeholder groups will meet at the following times each day:

  • 12:30-1:20 - Administrators
  • 1:30-2:20 - Staff members
  • 2:30-3:20 - Parents/community
  • 3:30-4:20 - Students
  • 4:30-5:20 - Staff members
  • 5:30-6:20 - Parents/community

Candidate Interview feedback form link and QR Code

There is a feedback form link and a QR Code available for community input on each candidate interview.  The feedback form link and QR Code, will be open each evening prior to the interviews and close at midnight and are available as a pop-up on the District’s website.  

A Board appointed subcommittee, consisting of Bobbie Murphy, Paul Cook, and Mary Ann Roney, will meet with stakeholders at the work site of each finalist on June 27th and June 28th.

Monday, June 27th, the Subcommittee will meet with stakeholders of Swartz Creek Community Schools, the workplace of Benjamin Mainka.

Tuesday, June 28th, the Subcommittee will meet with stakeholders of Warren Consolidated Schools, the workplace of John Bernia, and stakeholders of Oak Park School District, the workplace of Carol Diglio.

The full Board will meet on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at 7:00 p.m., to select our next NCSD Superintendent.

Tentative Timeline

Thursday, April 21: Michigan Leadership Institute (MLI) approved by Board of Education as superintendent search firm

Friday, April 22: Superintendent vacancy posted on MLI website

Tuesday, April 26: John Silveri, of MLI, met with NCSD's administrative council to obtain input on candidate profile and District points of pride

April 27-May 3: Meet with students by school to obtain input on candidate profile and District points of pride (exact dates/times TBD); Online survey open until 4 p.m., May 3. (Links to the online survey are listed below in the accordion)

May 2-3: Meet with stakeholder groups to obtain input on candidate profile and District points of pride

On May 2nd and 3rd, all interested staff members will have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Lisa Hagel, MLI Executive Director.  Dr. Hagel will be asking you to share what skills, abilities and characteristics we should be looking for in our next superintendent. You will be welcome to attend any one of the following meetings at the Educational Services Building (ESB)

  • Monday, May 2, 3:30 p.m., all district staff members 
  • Monday, May 2, 4:30 p.m., all district staff members 
  • Monday, May 2, 6 p.m., parents/community members
  • Tuesday, May 3, 3:30 p.m., all district staff members

Friday, May 6: Provide draft position announcement to Board for review/feedback

May 9-June 6: Post position announcement; accept applications until 4:00 p.m. on June 6. 

May 23:  Superintendent Search Planning Meeting, 6:00 p.m.

Thursday, June 9 Board Meeting:  Closed Session: Review of applicants; 
                                                           Open Session: Board to select candidates to interview;
                                                           prepare for first round interviews (i.e., select interview questions)

June 13-14: First Round Interviews conducted from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
June 15: First round interviews conducted from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Thursday, June 16 Board Meeting: Finalists selected, 6:00 p.m. 

June 20-21: Finalist interviews conducted from 7:30 p.m. to 9:40 p.m.;
                     each finalists meets with stakeholder groups prior to interview with the Board

June 27-28: Site visits (Board subcommittee meetings with stakeholders at work site of each finalist)

June 30 Board Meeting: Selection of Superintendent at 7:00 p.m.
