The school-level Bee, at which students answer written and oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 24th annual competition.

The start of this year's Bee was the week of November 14, with thousands of schools around the United States and in five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including Aditya, will now take a written test. Up to 100 of these top scorers in each state and U.S. territories will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on March 30, 2012.

Aditya's winning answer came as he correctly answered this question:

Competing alongside him were: Ian Mascarenhas, Steven Zhang, Carolyn Zhang, Jennifer Guo, Danielle Gardon, Abby O'Meara, Prateek Bhola, Alex Yuan and Sanidhya Singh. They demonstrated an outstanding knowledge of geography as well.

"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek will moderate the national finals program which will air on the National Geographic channel and again afterward on PBS stations that are produced by Maryland Public Television.
