Security Cameras
By providing constant monitoring and recording of activities on school grounds, security cameras help deter potential threats, aid in investigations, and ensure a safer environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Card Access
Key card access systems provide an essential layer of security for school facilities by restricting access to authorized personnel only. By utilizing key cards, schools can effectively control entry points, enhance safety measures, and mitigate the risk of unauthorized individuals gaining entry to sensitive areas.
Safety Drills
By conducting regular safety drills, Novi Community School District instills a culture of readiness to ensure swift and coordinated responses during crises such as fires, lockdowns, or natural disasters.
ALICE Training
Novi Community School District provides staff and students training through ALICE Training Solutions in the event of an active assailant on school property.
Visitor Management
All visitors are required to check-in at the main office of a school building. Visitors are required to be screened through the Raptor Visitor Management system and are provided a badge after being approved.

Standard Response Protocol
Public and nonpublic schools must implement standardized response terminology beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.
NCSD is adopting the recommendations from the Michigan State Police for the 2025-2026 school year.
Hold
A Hold is used when there is an incident inside the building that does not pose a threat outside the room, such as a medical situation or a minor disturbance. During a Hold, students remain in their classrooms or current location, and hallways are kept clear. Staff continue normal activities inside their rooms, and the situation is managed in a calm, controlled manner until it is resolved.
Secure
Lockdown
A Lockdown is used when there is a threat inside the building, such as an intruder or violent situation. During a Lockdown, students and staff stay in locked rooms, turn off the lights, and move out of sight. Silence is maintained, and everyone follows safety procedures until the threat has been addressed. Lockdowns are designed to protect students and staff while law enforcement or trained personnel respond.
Evacuate
An Evacuate is used when it is unsafe to remain in the building, such as during a fire, gas leak, or chemical spill. During an evacuation, students and staff calmly exit the building and proceed to a predetermined safe location. Staff ensure that attendance and accountability procedures are completed once everyone reaches the safe area. Evacuations are carefully planned and practiced so everyone knows exactly where to go.
Shelter
Sheltering is used during environmental or weather hazards, such as tornadoes, severe storms, or hazardous material releases. During a Shelter, students and staff move to designated safe areas inside the building and follow specific safety procedures depending on the type of hazard. Sheltering provides protection from external threats and helps maintain safety until the hazard has passed.
ALICE
ALICE is an enhanced response protocol used during violent intruder or active threat situations. It stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. During an ALICE response, staff and students are trained to alert others, lockdown safely, share information about the threat, counter if necessary to protect themselves, and evacuate when it is safe. ALICE encourages critical thinking and flexible responses to keep everyone as safe as possible.
